The Tubular rigid heddle
What is it?
To answer this question the best thing is to start from the beginning by understanding what a fabric is and how it is made.
A fabric
is a flat-surfaced product, foldable and soft, made by the interlacing of threads; the operation necessary to make it is called weaving. The threads that are interlaced to form the fabric are distinguished in warp and weft.
At the beginning of time, man used his bare hands to perform this interlacing. Developing his experience he started to build the first looms revolutionizing his life. The loom is the machine that helps and simplifies the interlacing of warp and weft. To be defined as such, a loom needs at least 2 heddles. A heddle is that part of the loom that raises and lowers the warp yarns to create the so-called "shed". In this separation the weft is inserted, thus making possible the automatic interweaving of the weft and the warp, without having to count the threads one by one as was done before the invention of the heddle.
There are different ways to raise and lower the warp. Throughout its history, man has studied and perfected various heddles. The company Telai Salusso has filed at the Chamber of Commerce of Torino an innovative system to move the warp. This system is today a patent
called Pettineliccio Tubolare
(Tubular rigid heddle).
The Tubular rigid heddle, son of our times
In a frenzied world, where people hardly find the time for themselves and the motto is "He who hesitates is lost", the hand-weaving lives, in Western society, an extension of that crisis that comes from the industrial revolution. If in the nineteenth century the hand loom was replaced by the mechanical one to save time, today it seems that there is no time at all to hand-weave.
The cities are getting bigger and more frantic and the houses are smaller and smaller. Man is lacking time and space. But traditional hand-weaving needs time and space.
So how can we reunite these two worlds?
The Tubular rigid heddle, in its small way, tries to answer the needs of a society that is always in a hurry and yet, at the same time, does not want to lose the pleasure of saying "I did this thing".
The Tubular rigid heddle is a loom son of our times. A loom that for its characteristics combines the rush of our life with the pleasure of doing things by hand, without the need for much space at home. The simplicity and speed of the Tubular rigid heddle brings back the ancient flavour of a country farmhouse even inside a small flat in a huge metropolis.
Who can take advantage of the Tubular rigid heddle?
Everyone. Adults, children, teenagers, elders, differently abled, professionals, amateurs, people living in the countryside or in a metropolis.
The Tubular rigid heddle is suitable for everybody. Because of the ease in preparing the warp, it's great for who is approaching the art of weaving for the first time but also for the professionals that are holding courses and want to involve the highest number of people possible.
If the Tubular rigid heddle is open, could the warp get out of the comb during the weaving phase?
