Card Weaving Loom

Card weaving (or tablet weaving) is a technique used to create trimmings and belts with a particular warp-faced web. In use for centuries in different parts of the world, this technique was abandoned and forgotten probably during the 16th century. It was rediscovered in Norway at the beginning of the 20th century after the finding, during an archaeological excavation, of a small 9th century loom that had a belt in progress and where the warp threads were divided not by the use of heddles but by small pierced cards made of wood. In other parts of the world the archaeologists had already discovered similar cards before, but no one understood what their use was. Now, after much speculation, it was all clear: with no doubt at all they were used to weave belts. Other similar findings aroused the interest of the experts; studies, publications and conferences were made and today this technique has its space on weaving manuals and in the hearts of many enthusiasts around the world.
